Android’s in-app billing makes a dent: Dungeon Defenders free on Android Market

Dungeon Defenders: First Wave cost $3 when it first came out. This week, the iOS version will cost you ninety-nine cents. But if you want to play the Unreal Engine-powered tower defense game today, you can have it for free — developer Trendy Entertainment is now leaning on Android’s new in-app billing system to pay for the whole thing. We can’t give Trendy all the credit, of course, as Glu Mobile’s Gun Bros and Tapulous’ Tap Tap Revenge 4 are doing the same thing, but to our knowledge both of them were free to play from day one. Free-to-play gaming has been a controversial proposition in the console and PC gaming space — most publishers would just like to sell a game once, and call it a day. On phone, however, where apps are expected to be cheap, it could indeed make more sense to charge users for items and upgrades than to have users “buy” the game. Either way, we penny-pinchers are pleased as punch with the idea. PR after the break.

Razer debuts Ferox portable gaming speakers

Well, it’s not exactly the announcement we were hoping for following Razer’s impressive showing at CES earlier this month, but the company has just gotten official with another product that will soon be available: its new Ferox portable gaming speakers. Described as a “sophisticated, modern day boombox for gamers,” the speakers promise to deliver some “room-filling,” 360 degree omni-directional sound, 12 hours of battery life from the built-in rechargeable batteries and, of course, full compatibility with anything sporting a 3.5mm jack. Hit up the gallery below for a closer look, and look for the speakers to be available by the end of the month for $60.

PSP2 will have 3G cellular data, OLED touchscreen

We’re only four days away from a supposed January 27th unveiling, but apparently there are still more juicy PSP2 rumors left to dole out — Japan’s often-reliable Nikkei newspaper reports that the handheld machine will sport a crisp OLED touchscreen and 3G data from NTT DoCoMo when it arrives later this year, with the latter enabling multiplayer action and even full video and game downloads over the Japanese cellular network. What’s more, the paper confirms that the screen will be physically larger and powered by some potent new silicon. So, how will Sony differentiate this PSP2 from the PlayStation Phone and tempt you to buy both? The game system won’t make calls.

Note: In case you’re not familiar, the image above is a relatively ancient reader mockup, and likely not representative of the final product. It is pretty sexy, though.

Dreamcast Collection Coming To Xbox 360, PC On February 22

The long-awaited Dreamcast collection for the Xbox 360 and PC now has a release date: February 22. The collection includes Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi, Space Channel 5: Part 2 (ha!), and Sega Bass Fishing. No price available just yet.

Sega says the games will feature “enhanced graphics” for both the 360 and PC, but only the 360 version has Achievements and Leaderboards. So if Achievements mean anything to you, then you’ll probably want to go the 360 route.

Also note that the PC version will only be digital download only.

Hopefully this is the start of more (and more frequent!) Dreamcast releases. I think we all can agree it was a console that was ahead of its time (even if it was only playing catch-up with what had been happening on the PC for several years by then).
